I’ve been talking to Stuart Harrison from Lichfield and one or two other people about the idea of creating a halfway house between a full on govcamp and something that would fit into the day job.
In London teacamps have been held which looks quite an attractive proposition.
The kind of half way house idea we came up with was a kind of hyperlocalgovcamp. This may be in an afternoon for three hours or sp with a few pre-announced sessions to coax newbies with a few other slots to allow the unconference to really flourish.
While this may be primarily attractive to West Midlands people, there’d be no-one at the door checking to see if you had said ’yam yam’ in polite conversation or not.
We’d kind of looked at the Light House in Wolverhampton as a suitable venue. Close to a train station. Central and
Any thoughts?
I’m in.
How is this progressing, Dan?
It’s actually going – quietly – pretty well. A few of us have met a couple of times and we’re scraping some money together for an afternoon shindig with some contributions from two sponsors.
We’re thinking September / October at Walsall College (they have warp speed wifi, a brand new building and my boss knows their boss and can do a bit of a deal.) Looking to meet this / next week to sort dates and get a space on this website sorted. In summary, starting to come together really nicely.
Brilliant to hear – great work all round!
That’s sounding great, Dan! Well done! ”Warp speed wifi,” huh? That’ll raise the bar for future full Govcamps!

Nou Camps: 2 years ago · ViewAnyone interested in a 2010 Lincoln GovCamp? I need to know numbers of interested parties so pop your answer and name on this here form: http://ht.ly/1Mv7N
Count me in, Andrew! Might be worth explicitly making the Lincoln one a webby GovCamp? It kind of was anyway last time, by accident probably rather than design, but I think that gives it a useful focus? Not sure what you think.
I’m hot and cold on that one; I think we were definately restricted with space and numbers as to what sessions we could run but I’d like to get a little more diversity into it if we do a 2010 camp… I know my background is web rather than, say, policy, but I know that it’s not only webbies that attend these gigs. I’m not sure whether specifically aiming the camp at webbies might detract people from attending?
What made me ask, actually, was because of the success of the Cheltenham one, which was purely about project management, of all things. It was a really good day and the focus meant a lot of people attended who would normally come near a ’camp. Having some focus lets you run sessions that are really specialised, which is A Good Thing, and besides, there are plenty of generalcamps happening… not that I’m trying to persuade you!
Of COURSE I’d be keen on govcamp in Lincoln. I was sorry to miss the last one and can’t help but see them as a vital thing.
This sounds great
